3 Critical SEO Strategies to Improve WordPress SEO and Get the Most Out of Your Blog

This is a guest post by Evan Hoeflich. He is a blogger and digital marketing strategist. In this post, Evan offers SEO strategies guaranteed to improve WordPress SEO and optimize your blog!

Nowadays it seems like everyone has their very own blog or has at least thought about starting one in the past. The growing number of blogs that are created on a daily, monthly and yearly basis is nothing short of extraordinary.  The unfortunate thing about this is the ever-increasing amount of competition and saturation this brings to current bloggers.

In order to stand out from the crowd and get found by both the search engines and real people, you must have a strong SEO foundation for your blog.  In this post, I am going to highlight 3 of the most crucial SEO strategies that bloggers should master for maximum exposure.

1.) Make Sure All SEO Tags Are In Place & Optimized Properly

This is really the starting point to optimize WordPress SEO and almost like the skeleton of your overall SEO strategy.  The main meta tags (SEO tags) we will go over today are the Title Tags, Meta Descriptions, H1 Tags, and Image ALT Tags.  If you already have these in place on your blog and properly optimized, you are way ahead of most of the competition. Let’s take a look at them in more detail below:

Title Tags: The Title Tag is the blue clickable text that people see in the search engines after typing in a specific search term in Google, Bing, Yahoo etc.  The Title Tag also shows up in the browser tab when people are on your website.  Each page of your website should have a unique Title Tag in place targeting the most important keyword phrases.  In terms of length, check out MOZ’s recommendations here. The Title Tag holds a lot of weight in the eyes of Google and shouldn’t be overlooked.

Meta Descriptions: The Meta Description is the snippet of text underneath the Title Tag when someone performs a search in Google (you can see the Meta Description in the picture above as well).  Although the Meta Description holds little weight as far as SEO goes, they can encourage user click-through-rate if written correctly which can ultimately bring more traffic to your website.

H1 Tags: The H1 Tags are important 1.) because they can be extremely effective from an SEO perspective and 2.) because they are the only front end facing tag (out of the 4 we’re reviewing) on the website.  It’s important to incorporate your most relevant keyword terms in your H1 Tags, and also ensure that it still reads naturally to visitors.

Image ALT Tags: This is one SEO tag that often gets overlooked yet is very simple to implement.  Every image on your website should contain a keyword rich ALT tag, explaining what that image is about to the search engines.  Images believe it or not have the potential to rank in the search engines, so it’s important to take advantage of this.

2.) Optimizing Content And Being Consistent will Always Improve WordPress SEO

When you write a blog post, you should strive to optimize it properly, while making sure it reads naturally and provides value to your visitors. Every piece of content you produce should contain your target keywords (or variations of them) as well as a few internal links where appropriate.  Copy optimization will help ensure there is keyword relevancy for the search engines to pick up on and the internal linking will help users navigate your website more effectively and spread link juice to other pages.  Combine this with optimized SEO tags in step #1 and you are well on your way to enhanced WordPress SEO that’ll drive more organic visits to your website.

The second part of this strategy is to without a doubt make sure you are consistent with your content generation.  At the very least you should strive to write one blog post per week but the more the better.  You wouldn’t believe how many people get this part wrong.  They think they can just post an article once every month or so and get loads of organic traffic to their website.  Wrong! It takes consistency and patience to grow your blog, and the more quality content you produce, the better.

3.) Building Quality Backlinks To Your Website with Improve WordPress SEO

Now the strategy that really brings everything together is link building…and by link building, I mean building quality and natural links to your website. This is a sure fire way to increase search rankings and organic traffic for your website over time.  This gives Google a strong signal that your website is authoritative (with the more links you build) and worthy enough of ranking for the keywords in your tags/content. One of the most powerful and accessible link building strategies today is guest posting.

Guest posting is really simple and involves reaching out to relevant blogs in your niche to see if they would allow you to write an article that would be published on their website.  In return, you would place your blog/website link in your article and obtain a natural backlink which Google loves. This has seemingly always been a way medium sized bloggers improve WordPress SEO and develop an annual SEO strategy.

If you get into a good rhythm of this technique and get your articles published on authoritative websites, you may just be shocked how much this can help with search rankings and organic traffic (not too mention referral traffic).  However, you must be patient in this approach as it takes a little while for Google to recognize new backlinks on your website.  Like step #2, be consistent with this and monitor your results.

I hope these 3 SEO strategies help improve WordPress SEO and guide you in the right direction to finding success in the search engines through blogging.  If some of this material is not all that new to you, I encourage you to then work on your consistency with steps #2 and especially #3.  This is really where the magic happens and where big leaps can be made!

  1. Recently came through this post Evan and would love to add one more point here for readers. Loved the way John Muller puts it for webmasters, “Be Yourself – Not your Keywords.” Following this quote, it would avoid all the possibilities of abusing landing pages and coming across a solid branded web copy that can go very long in SERP race with the right linking strategies.

  3. Consistency is definitely one of the hardest parts of SEO… It can be difficult to come up with topics to write about all the time, and paying people to write for you can be expensive if you actually want decent content and not the usual 1-cent-per-word nigh-unreadable drivel.

But eh, what can you do?
